
The Italian Sub Framework
The components for a great Italian hoagie at home.

I find that it’s helpful to think about the choices you make when assembling a sandwich at home.
Follow these components and steps to make a deli-quality Italian hoagie.

Ingredients
Hoagie roll of choice
- sesame roll
- homemade hoagie
- bakery sub roll
- bolillo
Lean cold cuts (2 parts)
- rosemary ham
- cooked prosciutto
- deli ham
Fatty cold cuts (1 part)
- salami
- mortadella
- soppressata
- fennel soppressata
- prosciutto
Cheese (1 part)
- fresh mozzarella
- provolone
- parmigiano reggiano
Condiments
- mayonnaise
- hot pepper spread
- olive oil
- vinegar
- fresh oregano
Seasoned vegetables (1 part)
- lettuce, shredded1/2 part
- tomatoes, sliced1/4 part
- onions, sliced1/4 part
- black peppera sprinkle
- olive oila drizzle
- salta sprinkle
Method
Step 1: Start with the bread & sauce
Cut the hoagie roll in half lengthwise.
Open up the bread and add the desired condiments on top of both slices.
Step 2: Add the meat & cheese
Add 2 parts your preferred lean cut meat as a base to the roll. Next, add 1 part of two different fattier meats on top.
- Mix & match to your preference.
Add the cheese on top of the meat.
Step 3: Add the vegetables
Add salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil to the lettuce and toss it together.
Add the tomatoes and then onions and whatever other vegetables you are using to the side of the bread without meat.
Add the dressed lettuce on top of the cheeses.
Step 4: Wrap the sandwich and enjoy
Close up the hoagie roll as tight as you can.
Wrap the sandwich in parchment paper.
- This will help everything compress together and changes the texture of the sandwich.
Cut the sandwich in half and enjoy.
